10 Comedies for New Year’s Eve At Home
Not sure what to do on New Year’s Eve this year? Take it from someone who was social distancing before it was cool: New Year’s Eve at home is where it’s AT.
Though I’ll be watching Christmas movies straight through New Year’s, sometimes it’s fun to watch a non-Christmas comedy during my movie marathon until midnight. These ten suggestions for comedies will have you entering the new year with a smile on your face.
1. Jack & Jill (2011)
Jack & Jill is a Hanukkah/NYE movie — perfect for your home-for-the-holidays New Year’s. It’s also got Adam Sandler x 2.
2. Snow Day (2000)
This winter-themed Nickelodeon comedy from 2000 follows two siblings’ quest to have the best snow day ever. (With Chevy Chase.)
3. Instant Family (2018)
This movie has Christmas in the movie, but it’s not a Christmas movie. It’s hilarious AND heartwarming, about Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne adopting three kids through foster care.
4. Nacho Libre (2006)
This classic comedy about Jack Black as a wrestling monk is guaranteed to make the whole family laugh. I quote this movie so much, no one even realizes I’m quoting it anymore. So anyways.
5. Holiday (1938)
When Johnny Case (Cary Grant) tries to marry into the stuffy Seton banking family, his free-thinking plan for his life is challenged…by everyone except Linda Seton (Katharine Hepburn), who gets along with Johnny better than his fiancé does (who is also her sister.)
6. While You Were Sleeping (1995)
While You Were Sleeping takes place over Christmas and New Year’s. Watching Sandra Bullock spend the holidays with the Callaghans always makes me feel Christmassy, no matter the season.
7. Bedtime Stories (2008)
When Skeeter Bronson (a hotel custodian who is the rightful…um, hotel manager of the kingdom) must babysit his niece and nephew, he discovers they have magic powers to bring their bedtime stories to life. This Adam Sandler family movie will have everyone laughing way past midnight.
8. Bringing Up Baby (1938)
This screwball comedy is the most laugh-out-loud classic movie I’ve ever seen. Another screen pairing of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, who somehow get tangled together in a careening plot to chase down Hepburn’s pet leopard…really stressing out Cary Grant in the process.
9. Mall Cop (2009)
While the movie is set at Thanksgiving, the post-holiday shopping stress might remind one of the days after Christmas. And when you have Kevin James, does it really matter what holiday it is? Also check out Mall Cop 2.
10. Zookeeper (2011)
If you can’t tell already, I really love Kevin James movies. In this one, he’s a zookeeper who wants to get his old girlfriend back (who doesn’t appreciate him for who he is). There are talking animals. It’s not (that) weird.
